Halcyon Low keep flying the shoegaze flag with new release

Continuing to fly the flag for shoegaze, Halcyon Low are back, and they’re sounding bigger, dreamier, and heavier than ever. The Cork-based 4-piece have been quietly (and loudly) carving out their own space in the genre, marrying thick, crushing walls of sound with more ethereal, hazy textures.

Formed in 2019, Halcyon Low’s journey started just as the world shut down. With gigs off the table, the band leaned into the studio, and that focus on recording paid off. When restrictions finally lifted, they were ready to make noise.

Their self-titled 2023 EP turned heads, with standout track Simple Boy finding its way into the award-winning film The Hurler: A Champion’s Tale. It was a statement piece, and now, with their new single Clover, the band are doubling down on what makes them special.

Clover sits right at the heart of Halcyon Low’s sound: it’s a track that swings between extremes, from dense, fuzzy riffs and pounding drums to tender, dreamy moments that shimmer with chorus-drenched guitars and soft, echoing vocals.

Lyrically, Clover looks back on a carefree, reckless time, a nod to the joy of going against the grain and somehow coming out the other side intact. That wistful, nostalgic thread has become a hallmark of the band’s songwriting, and here it feels especially resonant.

Recorded, mixed, and mastered by Ben Wanders at Wanderland Recording Studios in Limerick, the production captures both the grit and the glow of their sound perfectly. The accompanying video leans into the same vibe, taking inspiration from old-school skate clips to channel that reckless freedom and the bittersweet nostalgia of youth. It’s a perfect visual match for a song that feels like a memory half-fading in sunlight.

With Clover, Halcyon Low continue to prove that shoegaze is alive and well, and that they’re one of the most exciting Irish bands carrying that torch forward.
