Miles Away- A Nostalgic Alt-Rock Slow Burn
Formerly of Waterford-via-Cork outfit O Emperor, Whozyerman? (aka Paul Savage) has been quietly carving out a unique sonic lane since his 2022 debut album Blink
. That record leaned heavily into a lo-fi electronic palette, full of kosmische pulses and textured experimentation.
Fast forward to now, and the project has evolved. What started as a solo bedroom-pop experiment has grown into a full-band setup, bringing a richer, more dynamic energy both live and in the studio.
Miles Away- Layered, Mechanical, and Melancholic
The latest single, Miles Away, marks this shift perfectly. It’s drenched in youthful nostalgia but carried along on a driving alt-rock backbone.
There’s a lot going on under the hood here. Layers drift in and out, creating a sense of movement without ever feeling cluttered. The vocals land in a deadpan, conversational tone - detached but intentional - while the guitars slowly build toward a tightly wound interplay in the final minute.
The track moves with a kind of relentless, almost mechanical momentum, pulling in subtle post-wave textures that give it an edge without losing its melodic core.
Lyrically, Miles Away
taps into a very specific feeling: the hazy boredom of teenage summers. Days wasted, doodling, drifting—time stretching endlessly.
But there’s a twist. That same sense of boredom hasn’t disappeared with age - it’s just evolved. Now it’s filtered through screens, repetition, and a kind of digital fatigue:
And we're falling again and again, through those smudged screens, waiting for life to begin.
It’s a sharp line that captures the track’s emotional core - nostalgia colliding with modern disconnection.
Savage describes the song as more than just a memory piece - it’s also a personal reset:
I see the song as a call back to a much loved and missed pursuit… a need to play music and collaborate with fellow musicians in a shared space.
That sentiment is tangible in the track’s fuller sound. You can feel the shift from isolation to collaboration.
Miles AwayIsn’t on Spotify
In a move that’s becoming increasingly common among independent artists, Whozyerman? has opted not to release Miles Away
on Spotify following its April 2nd drop.
Savage cites ethical concerns, pointing to issues around royalty structures, AI-generated content, and broader corporate decisions. Instead, he’s encouraging fans to support music more directly - particularly through his Bandcamp.
It’s a bold stance, but one that aligns with a growing conversation about artist sustainability in the streaming era.
Miles Away
feels like a turning point. It bridges the gap between Whozyerman?’s lo-fi experimental roots and a more expansive, band-driven sound. It’s nostalgic without being sentimental, mechanical without feeling cold - and most importantly, it lingers.
If this is the direction Whozyerman? is heading in next, it’s definitely worth sticking around for.
The single, Miles Away, is available through all streaming platforms.
