If you’ve spent any time around the live music circuit in Galway over the past few years, chances are you’ve heard the name Meet The Fawkers. The band have been steadily building a reputation as one of the most dependable live acts around - equal parts grit, groove, and good old-fashioned barroom energy.

Originally starting life as a cover band, the group slowly evolved into writing their own material, and the shift clearly stuck. Their sound now sits comfortably somewhere between blues-rock swagger and dancefloor ready swing - rough around the edges in the best way. Since 2023 they’ve dropped a handful of singles and an EP, and now they’re back with their latest track, Too Mean To Die.

The new single leans hard into the classic country-blues storytelling tradition. It feels less like a polished narrative and more like overhearing a conversation in the corner of a late-night bar - someone reflecting on bad decisions, bad luck, and the stubborn refusal to pack it in. Matt’s lyrics are vivid enough that you can practically see the scene unfold in your mind as the story plays out.

Musically, the track eases in with a simple strummed guitar before settling into a laid-back, country-tinged rhythm. The bass threads its way around the vocal line with a melodic counterpoint, while the guitars keep things nicely twangy, sending tremolo-soaked chords and reverb-drenched echoes drifting through the mix.

When the solo arrives, it feels refreshingly honest - no flashy theatrics, just a tone that sounds lived-in and authentic. The guitar eventually steps aside for an organ solo, bringing the focus right back to the song’s unfolding story.

And it’s the lyrics that really land the punch. Lines like For everyone who gets to win, someone else they have to lose / And tonight, God chose me and you and Got that dirt under my nails, got that bloodshot in my eye / Like the old says, I’m too mean to die paint a picture of someone who’s taken a few knocks but isn’t about to stop swinging.

The band kept the whole operation close to home too. Recording duties were handled in-house by Matt, while mixing and mastering went to longtime collaborator - and former bandmate - Tadgh Kelly, now based in Berlin. Kelly has worked on all of the band’s releases to date, keeping that sonic thread running through their catalogue.

Beyond the studio and the stage, Meet The Fawkers are deeply invested in their local scene. One of the ways they give back is by hosting a monthly blues jam in Galway, giving up-and-coming musicians a chance to step up, plug in, and play alongside a full live band.

It’s the road-tested musicianship, and storytelling grit that keeps Meet The Fawkers moving forward - and Too Mean To Die feels like another confident step along that road.
