Underwater
Graceless is quickly becoming one of the most compelling new voices in Ireland’s alternative music scene. The project of Dublin singer-songwriter Grace Tooher, joined live by guitarist Richie McNeill, Graceless blends emotional vulnerability with cinematic indie rock textures that hit hard and linger long after the final note.
After making waves fronting IMRO Other Voices-featured band Staring at Lakes, Grace returned under the Graceless name with a sharper artistic vision and a sound that feels completely her own. Recent performances at Whelan's, Smock Alley Theatre, and The Works Festival, alongside a sold-out hometown headline show at Nenagh Arts Centre, prove audiences are finally catching up to what the music has been saying all along.
Following the release of debut single The Raven
and its follow-up God’s Plan,
Graceless now returns with Underwater - a haunting, slow-burning track that may be the strongest preview yet of the upcoming debut EP.
UnderwaterIs a Beautiful Descent Into Self-Destruction and Self-Awareness
Underwater
opens in near silence, patiently building atmosphere before crashing into layered guitars and pounding drums. The track thrives on tension. Grace Tooher’s vocals move effortlessly between delicate, breathy confessionals and soaring emotional peaks that feel genuinely unfiltered.
Richie McNeill’s guitar work deserves special mention here. His playing constantly balances restraint and chaos, mirroring the emotional push-and-pull at the heart of the song. It gives Underwater
a cinematic quality without ever losing its intimacy.
Lyrically, the track shifts inward compared to previous Graceless releases. While The Raven
wrestled with grief and God’s Plan
challenged external systems of control, Underwater
focuses on internal conflict - specifically the dangerous comfort that can come from feeding your own darkness.
Speaking about the song, Grace explains:
It’s about masochism. Knowing you’re drowning and finding something almost seductive in it. The darkness becomes a habit. You stop fighting it because part of you stopped wanting to.
That honesty is what makes Graceless stand out. Nothing about this project feels manufactured or overly polished. There’s a rawness to both the songwriting and production that makes every lyric land harder.
Grace also hints at what listeners can expect from the upcoming EP:
This EP is me confronting the parts of myself I usually hide. It’s messy, but it’s real. It was never meant to be anything else
If Underwater
is any indication, Graceless is building toward a debut EP that won’t just introduce a promising Irish artist - it could establish one of the most emotionally fearless alternative releases of the year.
The single, Underwater, is available through all streaming platforms.
