The Irish Singer-Songwriter Unleashes His Most Aggressive Sound Yet

Sometimes artists have to compromise, and that's exactly what Dublin-based singer-songwriter Conor Furlong recently found himself doing.

Following requests from several radio DJs, Furlong returned to the studio to create a clean version of his latest single, Killer. The original release features multiple uses of the f-word, making it a difficult fit for mainstream radio playlists. Rather than replacing the original, however, Furlong has made both versions available, allowing listeners to experience the song exactly as it was originally intended.

For fans of the prolific independent musician, it's just another chapter in an incredibly productive career. Furlong has already released seven albums along with numerous standalone singles, and he's currently gearing up for the release of his eighth studio album later in 2026.

A Bold Shift in Sound

Killer marks a noticeable departure from the sound of Furlong's recent releases, but without losing the qualities that have made him a respected figure on the Irish independent music scene.

Gone are the softer synth-pop textures and cinematic atmospheres that characterised much of his recent work. In their place is a darker, more urgent sound that leans heavily into alternative rock and post-punk influences.

The track is driven by gritty electric guitars, a relentless drum beat, and an ominous synthesizer that runs throughout the song. Layered vocals add depth and intensity, helping to create a sense of momentum that builds steadily from beginning to end.

Speaking about the track, Furlong explained:

The first single Killer is a good way in to the album, I think, as it contains many of the ingredients I was hoping to capture on the album – aggressive, powerful, melodic, and with something to say.

That description feels spot on. Killer manages to balance aggression with melody, delivering a song that feels both immediate and purposeful.

Built for a Big Crowd

One of the song's standout moments arrives during its climactic finale. As the tension reaches its peak, Furlong unleashes the line:

Hey hey, get out of my fucking face.

It's a moment clearly designed to be shouted back from a festival crowd.

As Furlong joked:

I'd love to have 10,000 people in a field sing that back to me. But that's not realistic. In my dreams maybe. Haha.

Dream or not, it's easy to imagine audiences embracing the song's defiant energy.

A True DIY Effort

True to his reputation as a dedicated DIY musician and self-confessed "studio hermit," Furlong recorded, mixed, and mastered Killer entirely from his home studio.

That hands-on approach has long been a defining feature of his work, and it's impressive how polished and powerful the final result sounds. The production never feels overworked, allowing the song's raw energy and emotional punch to remain front and centre.

Final Verdict

Killer is one of Conor Furlong's most exciting releases to date. It's darker, heavier, and more confrontational than much of his previous material, yet it retains the melodic songwriting and authenticity that fans have come to expect.

As a first taste of his upcoming eighth album, Killer suggests that Furlong is entering a bold new creative phase. If this single is anything to go by, listeners have plenty to look forward to in 2026.
