The Works

Few emerging Irish bands have gathered momentum quite like The Works. Hailing from the west of Ireland, the band have carved out a sound that effortlessly blends shimmering indie rock with psychedelic textures, creating music that's both atmospheric and instantly accessible.

Since making their live debut across some of Mayo and Galway's best-loved venues in late 2023, The Works have wasted little time expanding beyond the local scene. Sharing stages with New York outfit MAKUTA, Belfast's and The Savage Hearts has helped cement their growing reputation, while headline performances at the Róisín Dubh and gigs as far afield as Los Angeles, San Diego and Utrecht show just how quickly their audience is growing.

The band first introduced themselves in 2024 with the singles Moody and Junkie, before following them up with the EP The Things We Do To Get High. Those releases earned national radio support from Galway Bay FM, CRC FM and Flirt FM, alongside coverage from a range of Irish music publications. It's been an impressive journey so far, and their latest single, Upstart feels like another confident step forward.

Exploring themes of maturity, self-discovery and finding your own voice, Upstart takes a more restrained approach than some of the band's previous material. Rather than chasing big hooks from the outset, The Works allow the song to unfold naturally, drawing the listener into its calm, reflective atmosphere.

The track opens with the gentle strumming of an acoustic guitar, immediately setting a dreamy tone. Soft, intimate vocals drift into the mix almost like a whisper before the rhythm section gradually joins the arrangement. Layered with understated electric guitar lines and delicate piano flourishes, the production never feels overcrowded. Instead, every instrument has room to breathe, creating a warm, immersive soundscape that perfectly complements the song's reflective mood.

What makes Upstart so effective is its confidence in subtlety. There are no unnecessary flourishes or dramatic shifts - just beautifully crafted songwriting that allows emotion to shine through naturally. The gentle pacing and thoughtful arrangement make for a genuinely absorbing listen.

As The Works continue to develop their sound, Upstart demonstrates a growing maturity in both songwriting and production. It's another reminder that the Irish indie scene continues to produce artists capable of creating music that's both understated and deeply memorable.
