Milk Rain

Milk Rain aren’t exactly newcomers anymore - they’ve been quietly (and not-so-quietly) putting in the work for the past three years, sharpening their sound and turning their live shows into chaotic, high-energy affairs full of antics and just the right amount of mess. From day one, they’ve been carving out a space for themselves in Dublin’s underground indie scene, blending indie rock, punk attitude, and scrappy garage vibes into something that feels both loose and intentional.

True to their DIY ethos, the band have been steadily dropping singles since their debut, Gedrosian, back in 2022. Now, after months of graft, they’re gearing up for their long-awaited debut EP Saphic Failings. But before that lands, they’ve given us a taste of what’s to come with Desk Lamp, Night Stand - the opening chapter in a three-track arc exploring lust, love, and the kind of emotional fallout that comes from making spectacularly bad romantic decisions.

Sonically, Desk Lamp, Night Stand is Milk Rain doing what they do best. There’s a sunburnt surf-rock edge tangled up with fuzzy garage punk, all driven by playfully blown-out guitars and a rhythm section that never sits still. It kicks off with a crunchy riff that feels instantly lived-in, before the vocals slide in and the drums eventually follow - slightly off-kilter, a little unexpected, and totally in keeping with the band’s offbeat, lo-fi charm.

Lyrically, things are just as unpredictable. The track swings between wistful reflection and outright arrogance, with vocalist and songwriter Lisa Milk Murnane delivering lines that feel both personal and detached. There’s a sense that real people sit behind these songs - even if, as she half-jokes, she might not actually recognise them if they passed her on the street.

Messy, catchy, and a little bit unhinged in all the right ways, Desk Lamp, Night Stand feels like the start of something worth paying attention to.
