Countervela Least Expected Turns (Casadh Gan Choinne) Review

There are plenty of bands who can turn up the volume and make a racket, but few manage to combine heavy rock, progressive metal and traditional Irish influences in a way that feels genuinely distinctive. Countervela have been doing exactly that for more than two decades.

Formed back in 2002, the Irish band released a number of singles and an EP before eventually taking an extended hiatus. Rather than putting an end to the project, that break seems to have reignited their creative spark. The band returned in 2025 with the singles Roseblossom and Everything All, reminding everyone why they are such an intriguing presence on the Irish heavy music scene.

Now, with a new album planned for later this year, Countervela return with their latest single, Least Expected Turns (Casadh Gan Choinne).

Countervela Take Us Down Least Expected Turns

The opening moments of Least Expected Turns are deliberately understated. Two gentle guitar melodies intertwine over a soft, atmospheric backdrop, creating something that feels moody, reflective and almost fragile.

It doesn't stay that way for long.

The track suddenly shifts gears, exploding into a raw and forceful slab of heavy rock. The guitars become heavier, the intensity rises and the vocals arrive with a powerful, uncompromising edge that pushes the track firmly into metal territory.

What makes the song particularly interesting, though, is the way Countervela refuse to settle into one particular mood, volume or tempo.

The track constantly moves between restraint and release, using huge dynamic shifts to keep the listener guessing. One minute everything feels delicate and atmospheric; the next, the band are throwing everything into a crushing wall of sound.

It's this unpredictability that gives Least Expected Turns its character.

Irish Language Meets Heavy Rock

One of the track's most distinctive elements is its use of the Irish language.

Countervela collaborated with Gráinne Twohig and the late Cionnaith Ó Súilleabháin on the Irish-language lyrics, with Ó Súilleabháin also appearing in a spoken-word section. Berlin-based singer Eimeara was then brought on board to perform this part of the song.

Her contribution provides a fascinating contrast to the heavier sections.

Eimeara's vocals are floating, ghostly and ethereal, creating an almost dreamlike quality that sits beautifully against Colton's rawer and more forceful delivery. Rather than feeling like two separate ideas awkwardly stitched together, the contrasting vocal styles become one of the song's biggest strengths.

It's a combination that gives Least Expected Turns (Casadh Gan Choinne) a real sense of identity.

A Song About Rebirth and Change

Lyrically, the track explores ideas of rebirth, togetherness and uncertainty.

It's about walking a path without knowing exactly where it will lead. You don't necessarily know where you'll emerge at the other end, but the experience changes you along the way.

That theme fits the music remarkably well.

Least Expected Turns (Casadh Gan Choinne) is an impressive return from Countervela. The band's ability to combine progressive metal, heavy rock, atmospheric textures and Irish-language vocals makes for a track that refuses to sound like everything else currently coming out of the Irish heavy music scene.

With a new album on the horizon, Countervela look like a band who have plenty more surprises waiting.
