Formed in 2022, Galway four-piece Bedstraw have been steadily carving out their own space on the Irish indie scene. Originally performing under the name Lady’s Bedstraw, the band quickly built a reputation for intense and emotionally charged live shows, cutting their teeth in Galway venues including The Róisín Dubh and The Cellar.

Their sound has evolved considerably since those early days. Initially drawing heavily from grunge and 1970s blues-rock, Bedstraw have gradually moved towards a more melodic blend of indie pop-rock and art-rock, without losing the emotional intensity that has become a big part of their identity.

Now, with their second album on the horizon, the band have unveiled Messiah Pariah, the first single from the forthcoming record.

Bedstraw Bring A Lighter Sound To Messiah Pariah

Fronted by Aoife Delany Reade, who takes on both lead vocal and lyric-writing duties, Messiah Pariah immediately grabs attention with its catchy, melodic approach.

There is a playful quality to the songwriting, but underneath that surface is a much more serious subject. The song follows the story of a self-proclaimed messiah while exploring alcoholism and the way society treats people living on its margins.

The lyrics don't shy away from the subject, with lines such as I know it's our culture, like eating flesh lives in a vulture's bones adding a darker edge to what is otherwise an upbeat-sounding track.

That's where Messiah Pariah really works. Bedstraw don't hammer the listener over the head with their message. Instead, they wrap it inside an accessible indie pop-rock song that is easy to get into while giving you plenty to think about.

Bright Guitars And An Emotional Vocal

Musically, Messiah Pariah marks something of a departure from the band's heavier side.

Rather than relying on the distorted riffs that have featured in their earlier material, the track is driven by bright, clean guitars and rhythmic strumming. The bass provides a warm, steady foundation while the drums keep everything moving at an uplifting pace.

It's a relatively simple arrangement, but that works in the song's favour. The vocals are placed firmly at the front of the mix, allowing Aoife's delivery and the story behind the lyrics to remain the focal point.

Her distinctive vocal style gives the track plenty of character, balancing the playful nature of the songwriting with the emotional weight of its subject matter.

A Song About Seeing The Person Behind The Label

According to Aoife, Messiah Pariah is ultimately about people living on the fringes of society and the importance of approaching those individuals with greater humanity.

Messiah Pariah is a song about those living on the fringes of society and is written to encourage a more humanistic and person-centred approach when we meet people who fall outside of societal norms.

It's a message that gives the song an added depth. Beneath the catchy guitars and upbeat rhythm is a call for greater empathy and understanding.

That contrast between the music and the subject matter is arguably one of the track's biggest strengths.

The Messiah Pariah Video Looks Back At Bedstraw's Journey

The accompanying video adds another personal touch, documenting the band's journey together over the past few years.

Much of the footage comes from Bedstraw's first ever gig at The Cellar in Galway, giving the video a genuine sense of nostalgia. Seeing where the band started alongside their current material makes ‘Messiah Pariah’ feel like more than just the introduction to a new album – it feels like another step in Bedstraw's evolution.

For a band that only formed in 2022, they've already come a long way.

Final Verdict

Messiah Pariah is a confident next step for Bedstraw. The band have traded some of their heavier guitar attack for a brighter and more melodic indie pop-rock sound, but the emotional depth remains firmly intact.

Aoife Delany Reade's distinctive vocals and thoughtful songwriting give the track plenty of personality, while the contrast between its upbeat musical style and its darker themes makes it particularly effective.

With their second album now on the horizon, Messiah Pariah suggests Bedstraw are entering an exciting new chapter. It's catchy, thoughtful and unmistakably their own - a strong return from a band continuing to find their voice on the Irish indie scene.

Their album Modern Minds is set for release on the 4th of October 2026.
