Baz Harnett Delivers A Powerful Message With Ready When You Need Us
Hailing from Dublin’s northside, Baz Harnett has been steadily carving out his own space within the Irish alternative rock scene. His sound combines guitar-driven alternative rock with melodic songwriting, drawing influence from artists such as Neil Young and Radiohead, alongside the hazy, textured soundscapes associated with '90s shoegaze.
Following the release of his debut four-track EP in June, Harnett continues to build on that foundation with Ready When You Need Us.
A Shoegaze-Inspired Alternative Rock Sound
From the opening seconds, Ready When You Need Us
immediately establishes its atmosphere with layers of texture-heavy electric guitars. There’s a definite '90s shoegaze influence here, but Harnett keeps things grounded in a more direct alternative rock sound.
The bass and drums gradually lock into a hypnotic, driving pulse, giving the track plenty of momentum without taking away from its reflective mood.
Vocally, Harnett takes a suitably understated approach. His close-to-the-mic delivery sits comfortably within the wall of guitars, creating an intimate contrast with the bigger instrumental arrangement surrounding it.
It’s a combination that works particularly well. Rather than relying on a huge vocal performance, Harnett allows the instrumentation and lyrics to carry much of the emotional weight.
And then comes the payoff.
As the track reaches its conclusion, the repeated chant of Ready When You Need Us
transforms the song into something resembling an alternative rock anthem. It feels less like a polished studio hook and more like a collective statement - a group of voices standing together behind the song’s central message.
A Song About Help, Compassion And Unity
At the heart of Ready When You Need Us
is a fairly simple idea: people need help, and sometimes that help doesn't reach them.
Speaking about the inspiration behind the single, Baz says:
At its heart, this song is about help — a cry for help. In the uncertain times we live in, it can often feel as though violence and division receive more attention than peace, compassion and unity. 'Ready When You Need Us' reflects that feeling and gives voice to those calling out for support.
People are suffering, people are dying, and while many are willing and ready to help, too often that help never reaches those who need it most. Charity, aid and compassion can become trapped behind borders, politics and closed gates. This song is a reminder that the call for help is real — and that answering it matters.
From Spanish Guitar To Devoy Studios
Interestingly, Ready When You Need Us
began life in a much quieter setting.
The song was originally written on a Spanish guitar in September 2025 before developing through rehearsals at Yellow Door Rehearsal Studios.
It was eventually recorded and produced at Devoy Studios in County Wexford with producer and engineer Thomas McGovern.
While Harnett handles much of the instrumentation himself in the studio, the single sees him joined by bassist Tommy Malone and drummer Diarmuid Goggins.
Their contributions add another layer of energy to the recording, particularly as the track builds towards its anthemic finale.
The Verdict
Ready When You Need Us
is an atmospheric and purposeful addition to Baz Harnett’s growing catalogue. More importantly, the message never feels disconnected from the music. The combination of introspective vocals, driving instrumentation and the repeated call for support gives the single a genuine sense of urgency.
With a live performance at Doyle’s Corner on September 11th and more shows and new music planned throughout the year, Baz Harnett looks to be an artist worth keeping an eye on.
