Alternative singer-songwriter, Ross A, releases stunning new single

Music Review | 9th May, 2025 ******** Ross A

Formerly Ross Breen, Irish indie artist, Ross A, continues to cultivate his reputation as a respected songwriter. Following the previous single releases Some Other Time, Maybe, Flowing To You, Flowing Through and Be OK, the Kildare native returns with his latest, Heartland Girl, complete with chill-out soundscape.

Lyrically Heartland Girl, follows the tale of two characters over a multi-year period and is influenced by a Gabriel Garcia Marquez novel, with its leisurely pace and ample breathing space carrying the listener through the decades, gripped in the fates of the song's two lead characters.

As soon as I started writing the first verse, the words flowed easily and the story was a straight line I could follow to the end. I like a song you can float away on, walk around in, get lost in and we have an open-ended conclusion here, where the listener can decide the outcome for themselves, depending how they're feeling.
The song takes place in a metaphysical realm of 'Heartland' Americana, beginning in the mid-eighties and ending somewhere near present day. We're drawn in as the narrative unfolds amid a relaxed sonic ambience of subtly played acoustic guitar, drums, bass, piano and pedal-steel atmospherics. Heartland Girl is inspired by the arc of two characters in a Gabriel Garcia Marquez novel, Love In The Time of Cholera.
I really enjoy the synchronisation between the video and mood of the song, with its narrator flickering in and out of focus, as memories do. The video deals in light and shade, as do the song's lyrical recollections, alternating between cool clarity and hazy warmth. Simple, uncluttered production was important to me in order to give the linear narrative time and space to breathe - Ross A
