Making her debut in 2023 with the release of her debut EP, Midnight-15
, Belfast-based artist Robyn Maddox's, songwriting is rooted in theatrics and self-deprecation.
Working in collaboration with producer/drummer Darragh Tibbs, Maddox's writing marries raw, introspective lyrics with surreal stories, painting fantastical worlds that range from smoky, shimmery casinos to phantasmagoric encounters with her own conscience.
Now joined by the musical forces of David Dalzell (bass) and Marcus Porte (guitar), Maddox ushers in a new indie-pop era with her twisted new single, Margot, a track that showcases Maddox's unique style as her sultry vocals, supported by a chilled beat, deliver a darkly romantic track.
Lyrically, Margot
, dissects jealousy and its brutal consequences when conflicting emotions bubble over into something more sinister. Infatuation and envy mush together into blind rage, stickily sugar-coated in a synthpop-inspired world that tastes like how it feels to half-love, half-loathe somebody.
The track is laced with scathing lyrics alluding to body horror and violence; its sonic contradictions channeling the chiaroscuro of film noir.
Recorded at Analogue Catalogue Recording Studios in Rathfriland, Margot
is the first in a series of songs that explore a darker side of Maddox's sound, moving towards a more ominous tone with a dynamic new full band sound.
The single, Margot, is available through all streaming platforms.
