Indie artist, Myjyn, blends traditional and contemporary

Music Review | 17th March, 2025 Myjyn Myjyn

Irish artist, Myjyn, has created a unique sound, blending traditional and contemporary tones that are showcased in her latest release, Amhran Na Leabhar.

Classically trained, Myjyn flows with a poise which is rare to witness. This does not make the sound predictable, on the contrary: it allows the listener to feel safe while she transports us across her unique watery realms: looping, stretching and keening.

Releasing the debut single, Dark Is The Colour in 2024, quickly followed by Communion, Myjyn has been building a strong reputation for delivering her unique interpretation of Irish folk music, while championing the Irish language.

Myjyn creatively recreates the Irish traditional song Amhrán na Leabhar, which is a story about a shipwreck off the coast of Kerry in which priceless Irish Language books were lost to the sea. This was during a time when Ireland was under British colonial rule, so people had to learn Irish in secret. The loss of these books was a devastating blow to a culture already under threat.

I think this song is really important, especially now with the current major cultural resurgence of the language here in Ireland, and with the recognition the Irish language is getting abroad, with the likes of Kneecap and 'An Cailín Ciúin''s success. As a Gaeilgeoir myself, I'm proud to be able to add to this in my own way, especially with releasing this song during Seachtain na Gaeilge and St Patrick's weekend.
