Music Review | 10th Jan, 2025 Mr Billy Fitzgerald Mr Billy Fitzgerald

Alt-pop artist Mr.Billy Fitzgerald, spent 2024 releasing a number of well received singles that caught the sharpened ears of the music press. As the year begins he gives a taste of what to expect from his debut album with the release of his latest 80's tinged single, Let Us Be.

The latest release showcases Fitzgerald's abilites to craft music that effortlessly blends 80's pop with a modern feel. Catchy and melodic, Let Us Be is an up-tempo track with a soaring pop vocal over layers of synths.

Lyrically, Let Us Be explores the theme of being with someone when everyone else thinks it's a bad idea. Billy draws on his own experience, while growing up and learning how to be in a relationship and developing those tools, inevitably and regrettably, people get hurt along the way. Here he delves into this, as he declares love and devotion while facing down the barrage of words against the union. A true Romeo and Juliet story.

Following the demise of his former band, The Dead Flags, the alt-pop artist took a step away from music. After his self-imposed exile and a long journey back, Billy gathered his array of drum machines, synths, a half-broken Micro Korg along with his acoustic guitar and an assortment of pedals and amps. This became the sonic palette he would use to begin crafting his new indie-pop sound, leaning into 80's inspired sounds that rubbed shoulders with hip-hop tempos while juxtaposing the pain of heartbreak against sweet pop-centric vocal melodies.

Let Us Be is set to feature on Billy's forthcoming debut album, A Grand Romantic Gesture. The album will be his largest body of work to date, with the title summing up the themes that will flow across the 10 songs. A Grand Romantic Gesture will be available on 20th February, including a limited edition vinyl pressing.
