Folk artist Harry Fennell drops evocative new single

Music Review | 3rd Sept, 2025 Harry Fennell Harry Fennell

Rising indie folk voice Harry Fennell is back with his latest single, Upright Spike, marking his second release under his current label and solidifying his spot in Ireland’s indie folk scene.

Following the buzz of his debut single, the latest release blends the storytelling charm of classic folk with a modern, introspective twist. Co-written with his friend and bandmate Lughaidh Armstrong Mayock on electric guitar, the track layers warm acoustic melodies with punchy electric riffs, all held together by Michael McCarthy on drums and Aidan Gray on bass.

This song came from a place of learning to sit with discomfort, instead of trying to run from it. It's about those moments where you realise you're stronger than you thought—even when everything else is pulling you sideways. – Harry Fennell

Originally from the north Dublin coastal town of Donabate, Harry moved to Galway a year ago, joking it was mainly because people seem a little happier here. His music reflects that same balance of depth and lightness: life, love, heartbreak, and even death all get a turn in his songs, but always with a healthy dose of wry humor.

Upright Spike is a reminder that indie folk in Ireland isn’t just about nostalgia, it’s about feeling, reflection, and maybe even a little laughter along the way.
